The Schweizer M40e letter box wins the iF Design Award 2026
The M40e letter box from Schweizer draws on 50 years of Swiss design history and, indeed, has received international acclaim for it. The sustainable model for the future received the prestigious iF Design Award 2026 in the Product Design / Building Technology category. The M40e eco-model, launched in 2025, and the structurally identical square M30e combine iconic design with current sustainability and circular economy requirements. Thanks to their compatibility with smart parcel box solutions, they also keep pace with digitisation and urbanisation developments.
The design quality and consistently sustainable product concept of the M40e letter box has been recognised and distinguished through the iF Design Award 2026. A jury comprising 129 leading international experts in design and sustainability recognised the model in the Product Design / Building Technology category as an exemplary and socially relevant product development. Established in 1953, the competition is one of the world’s most prestigious awards for outstanding design and honours work that challenges conventions, rethinks systems and further develops everyday solutions in innovative ways.
The M40e is part of a long design tradition. The B74 letter box has been regarded as an icon of Swiss industrial design since 1974. Developed in collaboration with the designer Andreas Christen, it was, in terms of its design, ahead of its time. An integrated modular system enabled flexible configurations, easy repairs and resource-efficient production. Understated and functional, yet very distinctive, the B74 has been used by architects and designers for decades as a defining design element.
Consistent eco-design for tomorrow
The successor model, the M40e, and the structurally identical square model, the M30e, represent a logical evolution of the classic design. With their minimalist, clean design, they blend seamlessly into a wide variety of architectural settings. Simultaneously, the new eco-models combine iconic design with contemporary sustainability, material efficiency and circular economy requirements.
In conceptual terms, the new model range adheres strictly to the principles of eco-design. A newly developed inner casing made from 100 per cent recycled plastic, combined with a stylish outer shell made from high-quality aluminium, reduces CO₂ emissions over the entire life cycle by up to 40 per cent when com-pared to an all-aluminium construction. Both materials are fully recyclable and suitable for the circular economy. Optimised features such as the integrated “No advertising” sign, flush-mounted nameplates, security lock cylinders and compatibility with smart parcel box solutions meet the demands of digitisation and urbanisation.
“Our new eco-models, the M40e and M30e, demonstrate that iconic design, technological innovation and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive, but rather reinforce one another,”
emphasises Christoph Moser, Head of the Letterbox and Parcel Box Division at Schweizer.
“Winning the iF Design Award 2026 confirms our commitment to developing products that are architecturally compelling and, simultaneously, make a measurable contribution to resource conservation.”
